Skyhawks girls net quarterfinal victory

Technically, the Silverado girls tennis team played a road match Monday.

But the Skyhawks looked right at home on Las Vegas High's courts.

Silverado (10-2) won five of the first six sets en route to a 13-5 victory over the Wildcats (8-5) in a Sunrise Region quarterfinal.

"Our whole lineup did a good job all the way through, which is always nice to see," Skyhawks coach Mark Parantala said. "Now we just have to keep it going."

Silverado led 5-1 after the opening round of matches and didn't let up, taking an insurmountable 10-2 lead into the final round.

Nicole Santero led the Skyhawks, winning all three of her singles matches. She rallied from a 3-2 deficit in her final set to beat the Wildcats' Val Shively, 6-3.

"I got a little frustrated in my third match, but I love playing tennis so much, it was fun to go all three," said Santero, the only Silverado player to compete in all three rounds.

Kristen Santero was 2-0 and Ashley Newell 1-1 in singles for the Skyhawks, who won seven of the nine singles sets and six doubles sets.

Only Shively's 6-4 victory over Ashley Newell prevented a Silverado sweep in the first round. But Las Vegas couldn't get anything going in doubles play, losing six of nine matches.
