Skyhawks play keepaway, blast Gators

Fifth-ranked Silverado was concerned that Green Valley's passing offense would take advantage of a strong wind at its back for two quarters Friday.

The Skyhawks found an overwhelming solution.

Silverado did not let the Gators run an offensive play until four minutes into the second quarter. By the time Green Valley's offense finally took the field, Silverado had run 26 plays from scrimmage and built a 7-0 lead.

Green Valley (2-5, 1-2 Southeast Division) was unable to recover, and Silverado stayed unbeaten with a 41-12 home victory.

The Skyhawks (6-0, 3-0) took the opening drive 73 yards in 16 plays, scoring on Nicholas Underwood's 1-yard sneak.

The ensuing kickoff slammed into one of Green Valley's up men and was recovered by Silverado. Though the possession ended with a missed field goal, the Skyhawks were able to run out the rest of the quarter.

"It was a big deal to us because we wanted to be able to keep them from throwing with the wind," Silverado coach Andy Ostolaza said. "Then they had to throw into the wind from (their own end of the field), and it made things difficult for them."

Green Valley struggled once it got the ball. The Gators lost a yard on their first possession, then a 1-yard punt set up a 20-yard touchdown run by Underwood on Silverado's next play from scrimmage.

After another stop, Silverado took just two plays to score when Underwood connected with Adam Koglin on a 50-yard touchdown pass.

Telvin McMillian ran for 153 yards, including a 77-yard TD in a third quarter in which the Skyhawks outscored Green Valley 20-0 with the wind at Silverado's back.
