Snider, 51s ruin Sky Sox home opener

Travis Snider went 4-for-5 with a grand slam to pace an 18-hit assault as the 51s routed Colorado Springs 14-0 in the Sky Sox's home opener Friday night.

Snider, whose fourth-inning slam opened the scoring, also singled and scored in Las Vegas' seven-run fourth inning, doubled and scored in the sixth and laced an RBI single in the seventh. He's batting a team-high .438.

Anthony Gose and Ricardo Nanita each hit a two-run double in the fourth as the 51s (3-6) posted a season high in hits and matched their best scoring output.

Adeiny Hechavarria went 3-for-6, improving his batting average to .421, and was one of seven Las Vegas players with multiple hits. Eight had at least one RBI, Travis d'Arnaud had two doubles, Moises Sierra hit a solo home run, and David Cooper -- the reigning Pacific Coast League batting champion -- was the lone 51s player without a hit.

Starting pitcher Joel Carreno won his Las Vegas debut, limiting the Sky Sox (4-5) to one hit and two walks and striking out eight in five innings. Andrew Carpenter and Clint Everts each worked two innings to complete the six-hit shutout.

Colorado Springs starter Rob Scahill (1-1) was lit up for 10 runs on 10 hits and one walk in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out four. Catcher Wil Nieves, the No. 9 batter, went 2-for-3 and was the lone Sky Sox player with multiple hits.

The teams will play the second game of their four-game series at 12:05 p.m. PDT today.
