Strong pitching helps 51s gain split

Zach Jackson and two relievers combined to pitch a four-hit shutout Thursday as the 51s beat the Salt Lake Bees 2-0 in the second game of a Pacific Coast League doubleheader in Salt Lake City.

Each game was scheduled for seven innings, but the Bees tied the first game at 1 in the seventh and won 2-1 in eight.

In the first game, Jackson allowed three hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings before giving way to David Purcey (1-0), who allowed one hit in 1 2/3 innings. Sean Henn worked around two seventh-inning walks for his first save.

Brian Dopirak drove in a run in the first inning with a two-out infield single. Brett Wallace hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season with two outs in the fifth for Las Vegas (9-6).

Chris Lubanski got the 51s on the board first in the first game with his third homer of the year, a leadoff shot in the third.

Salt Lake (6-9) tied the score in the seventh with an unearned run off closer Rommie Lewis (0-1). Peter Bourjos scored from second on third baseman Christian Colonel's two-out throwing error.

Lewis struck out the Bees' first two batters in the eighth before Mark Trumbo singled, stole second and scored on Terry Evans' soft liner to right field.

Las Vegas starter Lance Broadway shut out Salt Lake on five hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out two.
