Syracuse, Aztecs set for game on USS Midway Museum flight deck
Organizers say San Diego State and Syracuse will play in the inaugural Battle on the Midway basketball game, on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum on Nov. 9.
The Midway has been berthed on San Diego Bay since 2004.
The Battle on the Midway will be part of a Veterans Day weekend celebration. On Nov. 11, Barry Zito of the San Francisco Giants will host a gala and concert on the ship for his foundation -- Strikeouts for Troops.
Last Nov. 11, North Carolina beat Michigan State in the inaugural Carrier Classic on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson. Morale Entertainment Foundation, which produced the Carrier Classic, announced recently it will move the Carrier Classic out of San Diego for 2012 because no active Navy ship was available.
■ KENTUCKY -- Lexington, Ky., police said they made more than 50 arrests during raucous celebrations after the Wildcats' NCAA championship win over Kansas on Monday night.
Police Chief Ronnie Bastin said people arrested were charged with offenses that included disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
He said more than 15,000 to 20,000 fans filled the streets. Dozens of small fires were set, and police said one man was shot when gunfire broke out and later had to have his foot amputated.
No arrest has been made in the shooting. Bastin said the majority of fans were responsible, friendly and cooperative and represented the city and team well.
■ MICHIGAN STATE -- Center Derrick Nix was suspended indefinitely after his arrest early Tuesday on suspicion of operating a vehicle with the presence of drugs and possession of marijuana.
Nix was arrested about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to a district court in East Lansing, Mich.
"Based on the information we have received, Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball team, and his future with our program is uncertain," coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. "He made an irresponsible decision that has put his future with our program in serious jeopardy."
Nix averaged 8.1 points in 2011-12 as a junior, and his improvement was a big reason Michigan State tied for first in the Big Ten and won the conference tournament. The Spartans lost in the NCAA round of 16.
■ DRAFT DECLARATIONS -- Washington guard Tony Wroten announced he will declare for the NBA Draft and hire an agent, ending his collegiate career after one season during which he was the Pac-12 freshman of the year but could not help the Huskies reach the NCAA Tournament.
Wroten made his announcement less than 48 hours after teammate Terrence Ross announced his intention to leave Washington following his sophomore season. Wroten averaged 16.0 points, just behind Ross' 16.4.
Also, Weber State guard Damian Lillard, the two-time Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player, will bypass his final year of eligibility and declare for the draft.
Lillard finished second in the country in scoring, averaging 24.5 points.
