Tip-off events slated

The winter sports season officially tips off Friday, and that means tip-off basketball tournaments.

Fans of girls basketball will have two choices, as two tournaments will take place Friday and Saturday.

The eight-team Skyhawk Jamboree begins at 9 a.m. both days at Silverado.

Each team will play three pool games Friday, with a double-elimination bracket scheduled for Saturday.

Along with the host school, Arbor View, Basic, Cimarron-Memorial, Eldorado, Palo Verde, Valley and Western will participate.

The championship game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

On the other side of town, the LasVegasHoops.com Tip-Off Classic will be Friday and Saturday at the Centennial Hills YMCA.

The four-team tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Canyon Springs, Green Valley, Legacy and Bonanza will participate.

Saturday's championship game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

WRESTLING TOURNAMENT -- The start of the winter season also will bring a wrestling tournament.

The Charger Duals will be Friday and Saturday at Clark. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. both days.

The 12-team tournament features, in addition to the host team, Canyon Springs, Centennial, Coronado, Del Sol, Durango, Green Valley, Las Vegas, Mojave, Silverado, Spring Valley and Valley.

The championship match is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday.

SIGNINGS -- Two girls basketball standouts highlighted the list of Bishop Gorman athletes who have signed letters of intent during the early signing period, which began Nov. 14.

Center Ashley Gayle, a first-team all-state selection last season, signed with Texas. Guard Darriel Gaynor, a second-team all-stater, chose Oregon.

The Gaels also had two baseball players sign with Pac-10 schools. Outfielder Brandon Garcia signed with Southern California, and pitcher Donn Roach signed with Arizona. Like Gayle and Gaynor, the baseball duo helped the Gaels to their second consecutive state title last season.

Boys golfer Kevin Collig-non rounded out Gorman's fall signees, picking Northern Colorado.

Las Vegas High baseball player Bryan Harper made his college choice official, signing with Cal State Northridge. Harper was 7-0 with a 1.29 ERA in the spring.

And Centennial girls golfer Alex Borcherts signed with UNR. She won the Class 4A state championship this fall.

REGIONAL TITLE SITE SET -- The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association announced Tuesday that Saturday's Sunset Region football championship game would be at Bishop Gorman.

Gorman played its first game on its new campus last week, posting a 43-16 victory over Cheyenne.

Saturday's game against Palo Verde is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on KDWN-AM (720).
