TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK by Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
1 Sister Glady Oh La - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this $20K price tag; sprinter stretching out should show early speed.
5 Amulay - Iggy Puglisi has ridden her to 3 straight victories; has a shold Santa Anita resume so has some home field advantage.
Long Shot - Gittel
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, $75,000 San Pedro, 3-year-olds
2 Indianapolis - Well regarded colt won his debut like a good thing; still time to get on the KY Derby trail with a good try.
4 Elmonte Cristo - Another private purchase by Jerry Hollendorfer; he picked up 3-YO Shared Belief the same way.
Long Shot - 3 Papa Turf
Race 3 - 7 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
5 San Onofre - Has won twice like a good thing, but is still carefully managed; step by step, now going another furlong.
3 Protocol - Didn’t show much in turf debut last time; is returned to dirt where he run much faster at SA and Aqueduct.
Long Shot - 6 Got Even
Race 4 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
3 Big Medicine Man - Didn’t kick it in late last time when in position to win; starts a Pick 6 with a $94K carryover.
8 Bury Pacer - English imports can do damage in their U.S. debuts; this one goes first Lasix and picks up Mike Smith.
Long Shot - 2 Closet E
Race 5 - 7 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
6 Zuboff - Peter Miller barn is on a roll, so give his stock a second look, always; this one keeps dropping in class.
3 Senator Bob - Speed is always dangerous and this guy on the cut back even more so; Rafael Bejarano will nurse the speed.
Long Shot - 2 Half Dome Dude
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
11 Dixieland Blues - Like the parking post down the hillside turf course; suspect will sit a trip and rally wide late.
4 Insideondoutside - Tepid chalk in the hardest race on the program; more love for Peter Miller barn on the drop.
Long Shot - 8 Koast
Race 7 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
3 Yana - Lot of gaps in her brief resume; she shows some talent and finds a group where she can finally boss them.
11 Capers N Wine - It only seems like I’m picking every Peter Miller horse to win; this one will be ridden by Victor Espinoza.
Long Shot - 4 Cause Ur My Babe
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
7 Pulpit’s Express - Has tried the hill twice to no avail; I still like the cutback in distance where he’ll run on late.
12 Bro’s Bro - This race has the potential to blow up the Pick 6; parking lot post and speed for top rider Joe Talamo.
Long Shot - 4 Mr. Ornery
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
9 Katy’s Plum - Well bet in debut, but took a while to get a hang of things; green race, slow early, fast late, expect better.
7 Yesterday Sings - This is a sneaky barn where turnarounds do happen; was very green in debut and encountered some trouble.
Long Shot - 8 Perched
Best Bet - 5 San Onofre (race 3)
Santa Anita Park Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$38.40; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Park Totals - 278/91/$559.80; Long Shots, 139/17/$180.80; Best Bets, 17/8/$34.00
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #1 Classic Stance (3/1) in race 7 at Fair Grounds. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Subtle ran out at Gulfstream Park. Stats - 16/10/$73.20; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
