Top local teams bow out early

Tuesday won't go down as one of the shining summer basketball moments for teams from Southern Nevada.

As single-elimination bracket play got under way in three summer tournaments, only one of six local teams competing in Open division play -- the Las Vegas Prospects -- managed to advance. The Prospects, playing in the adidas Super 64 Championship bracket, narrowly beat the Student Athletes Broncos of New York, 68-65, and will face Colorado Select Blue at 3:40 p.m. today at Rancho High School.

"This is different from pool play," Propsects coach Anthony Brown said. "In pool play, we want to let everyone get a look. Now that we're in the bracket, the philosophy is different. We're trying to win it."

Led by Anthony Marshall, Chris James and Jonathan Loyd, the Prospects hung in during a back-and-forth battle. James broke a 55-55 tie with a jumper with just under five minutes remaining to put the Prospects up for good.

In the Super 64 Silver Bracket, the Las Vegas Dynasty Elite was eliminated by Richardson Elite, 76-72.

Despite losing its final game of pool play at The Main Event, the Las Vegas Magic qualified for the tournament's Platinum bracket. But Tuesday morning's 67-58 pool-play loss to Waco (Texas) Basketball set the stage for a disappointing day. The Magic lost to the Dallas Pacers 88-60 in bracket play to fall out of the tournament with a 2-2 record.

The Magic led by five at halftime.

"We did a little showboating and got some dunks, but we stopped playing defense," said coach Warren Rosegreen, a former UNLV forward. "Before we knew it, we were down 16. It's very disappointing."

In the Main Event Gold 2 bracket, the Las Vegas Dogcatchers Elite stayed alive by beating Bulls Academy 16s, 74-71. Mitrell Clark scored 37 points, including eight 3-pointers, to lead the Dogcatchers, who play at 4:40 p.m. today at Valley High School against the Northwest Cougars.

In the Reebok Summer Championships, all four local teams were eliminated from the Open Division. The Southern Nevada Power House won its first game, beating Houston Elite, 90-87. Later, the Power House was eliminated by the Michigan Hurricanes 83-81 and finished 4-1.

Triple Double Elite was ousted by Spirit Got Game of California 66-60 and finished 1-3. Triple Double Elite II finished 2-2 after losing to Team CBIZ 15s of Ohio, 81-64. Las Vegas Dynasty Red, which went 3-0 in pool play, lost to the Oregon Rebels 94-76 in bracket play.
