Tucson hands 51s sixth straight defeat

Tucson sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the third inning, carrying the Sidewinders to an 8-4 victory over the Las Vegas 51s in the Pacific Coast League on Monday night at Tucson, Ariz.

The 51s took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a Mitch Jones homer and three singles. But Tucson's big third inning doomed Las Vegas (41-38) to its sixth straight defeat.

51s starter Jon Meloan gave up four hits and three walks in the third inning, and two Las Vegas errors led to three runs. Tim Raines Jr. and Robby Hammock had RBI singles.

Raines also had a two-run double to key the Sidewinders' three-run sixth inning, which ended the scoring.

Meloan (4-7) lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowed eight hits and eight runs, four earned.

Yusmeiro Petit (3-3) got the win for Tucson, going five innings and allowing six hits and four runs, all earned.

The 51s had eight hits, two by Jason Repko.

The teams finish their four-game series at 7 p.m. today. The 51s visit Fresno for four games beginning Thursday.
