U.S. Women’s Open set for Sunset Station lanes
The U.S. Women's Open bowling championship will have an added international flavor when the six-day event begins today at Sunset Station.
Colombia's Clara Guerrero will be among the 200 competitors. Guerrero won two gold medals in the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Women's Championships on Sunday at Cashman Center.
Guerrero, who finished first in all-events and won Sunday's Masters competition, is among about 50 international bowlers who remained in Las Vegas to compete in the Open, which pays $25,000 to the champion.
"I feel really good right now, and I'm bowling the best I ever have," said Guerrero, one of three international players to make the top 16 at the 2008 Open, won by American Kim Terrell-Kearney.
Qualifying is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Thursday before the field is cut to the top 25 percent for Friday's competition. The top 12 from Friday will advance to match play Saturday and Sunday.
