UNLV baseball team ends losing streak in New Mexico
Erick Fedde pitched six strong innings, and Pat Armstrong went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored as UNLV beat New Mexico on Friday 8-2 for its first victory in Albuquerque in four years.
The Rebels, who never trailed, scored six runs in the final two innings to break open a 2-2 game. Five of those runs were unearned as the Lobos committed four errors and a balk.
Armstrong and A.J. Hernandez reached on fielding errors in the eighth. Armstrong scored on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Stotts to put UNLV ahead 3-2, and Hernandez scored on a balk.
The Rebels (9-3, 4-0 Mountain West) — who took a 2-0 lead in the second on Joey Armstrong’s two-run single — added four runs in the ninth on hits by Craig Shul, T.J. White, Pat Armstrong, Edgar Montes and Stotts, and two errors by New Mexico (8-5-1, 0-1 MW).
Fedde allowed two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out five.
Joey Lauria (2-0) pitched a perfect inning of relief to get the win. Brayden Torres pitched the final two innings — recording the final out after a 15-minute blackout in the bottom of the ninth — to notch his second save.
The teams will meet again at 1 p.m. today.
