UNLV men’s golfers second after MW’s first round
The UNLV men’s golf team shot a 3-over-par 287 in the first round of the Mountain West championship Friday and trails leader New Mexico by five strokes in the 54-hole event at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Resort in Arizona.
Two-time defending team champion San Diego State is third at 288 and Colorado State fourth at 296.
New Mexico’s Victor Perez leads UNLV senior Kevin Penner by a stroke on the individual leaderboard after firing a 5-under 66. Penner had five birdies and a bogey en route to a 67.
New Mexico’s Gavin Green is third at 70, and UNLV sophomore Kurt Kityama is in a five-way tie for fourth at 71.
■ UNLV BASEBALL — Erick Fedde pitched eight strong innings to lead UNLV past Fresno State 4-1 in their series opener at Wilson Stadium.
Fedde scattered four hits and had eight strikeouts, with three walks, for the Rebels (29-16, 12-10 Mountain West), who moved into a tie for second place in the conference.
UNLV scored all of its runs in the sixth inning, when Patrick Armstrong hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, Joey Armstrong followed with an RBI walk, and two runners scored on an error by the Bulldogs (15-28, 9-13 MW).
Erik VanMeetren had two of the Rebels’ six hits.
■ UNLV SOFTBALL — After rallying from a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead, UNLV (20-27, 6-7 MW) surrendered 10 straight runs to Boise State (22-24-1, 6-7 MW) in a 15-6 loss in Mountain West play at Eller Media Stadium.
Pauline Monreal had three hits and two RBIs and Alyssa Cordova drove in three runs for the Rebels.
■ CSN BASEBALL — The College of Southern Nevada (36-15, 24-10 Scenic West Athletic Conference) defeated Colorado Northwestern Community College 17-7 and 9-2 at Morse Stadium.
■ CSN SOFTBALL — The Coyotes (31-25, 24-21 SWAC) beat Western Nevada 8-3 and 11-2 to run their winning streak to seven games.
