UNLV names Clausen starting quarterback
August 30, 2010 - 1:34 pm
Junior Mike Clausen, who started just one game at quarterback for UNLV last season, today was named the starter for the Rebels' season opener against 12th-ranked Wisconsin at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday.
Clausen was selected by first-year Rebels coach Bobby Hauck over the more experienced Omar Clayton, a senior.
Clausen completed 52 of 88 passes for 463 yards and four touchdowns last season, while throwing two interceptions. By comparison, Clayton was 196-for-326 for 2,230 yards and 13 TDs, while throwing 12 interceptions.
The left-handed throwing Clausen's lone start in 2009 came against in-state rival UNR, when he completed 26 of 60 passes for 276 yards and one interception in a 63-28 loss.
Clausen also is a deft running quarterback. He rushed 69 times for 288 yards last season, scoring seven touchdowns.
