UNLV women’s golf nets third

The UNLV women's golf team finished third at the Mountain West Conference Championships on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Rebels shot 10-over-par 302 in the final round for a 40-over 916 total in the three-round tournament.

New Mexico coasted to the team title, shooting 7-over 299 on the final day for a 12-over 888 total, 19 shots ahead of second-place Brigham Young. The Lobos were the only team to shoot below 300 in all three rounds.

Jodi Ewart led New Mexico by winning her second straight individual title, shooting 1-under 72 Saturday for an even-par 219 total, two strokes ahead of teammate Morgan Grantham and BYU's Natalia Jimenez.

Therese Koelbaek paced UNLV, shooting 74 to finish tied for fourth at 4-over 223. Natasha Krishna (74) and Alejandra Guacaneme (76) tied for 10th at 10-over 229, and Tonya Choate (78) tied for 20th at 237.

After the tournament, Ewart and Texas Christian's Valentine Derrey were named MWC Co-Players of the Year, and Koelbaek was named Freshman of the Year.

Koelbaek, who led the conference in stroke average (73.96), was joined on the all-conference team by Krishna, who made the squad for the second straight year.

• UNLV SOFTBALL -- At Albuquerque, N.M., the Rebels beat New Mexico 14-5 in a Mountain West Conference game to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Jaci Hull led UNLV (22-30-1, 2-7 MWC), going 3-for-4 with a third-inning grand slam and two runs.

Rosa Ordaz and Alyssia De La Torre both went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs. Ordaz had a three-run homer in the seventh, and De La Torre hit a two-run shot two batters later.

Ashley Arnett (2-0) got the win, allowing three runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

• CSN BASEBALL -- At Price, Utah, the College of Southern Nevada completed a four-game sweep of Eastern Utah with wins of 2-1 and 11-6, extending its winning streak to seven games.

Brenton Van gave up one run on three hits and four walks, with seven strikeouts, in 6 1/3 innings in the opener for CSN (33-14, 22-10 Scenic West Athletic Conference).

In the second game, Robbie Garvey, Braeden Schlehuber, Devin Shepherd and Easton Gust had two hits apiece for the Coyotes. Shepherd also had two RBIs and scored three runs.

With help from a Western Nevada sweep over Salt Lake Community College, CSN is one game out of first place. The Coyotes will face Salt Lake next weekend at Morse Stadium in their final home series.
