UNLV women’s tennis posts shutout

The UNLV women's tennis team blanked Colorado State 7-0 in a neutral-site match at San Diego State's Aztec Center.

UNLV (13-8, 5-2 Mountain West Conference) swept the three doubles matches for the first point, then took all six singles matches, losing only two sets.

Elena Gantcheva, ranked 35th, led 5-0 in the first set when Hilary Tyler had to retire. Gantcheva improved to 26-10 overall, 6-1 in conference play.

Nikol Dimitrova, Anna Maskaljun and Katy Williams posted straight-set wins, and Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva -- ranked 48th in doubles -- improved to 7-0 in MWC matches.

• UNLV MEN'S TENNIS -- At Provo, Utah, playing their second neutral-site match in two days on Brigham Young's indoor courts, the Rebels beat San Diego State 4-2 to close the regular season.

UNLV (10-11, 3-3 Mountain West Conference) dropped all three doubles matches as the Aztecs took the first point, but the Rebels came back to take four of five completed singles matches.

Eliott Wronski rallied at No. 1 singles for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Matan Shitrit.

On Friday night, UNLV lost to Utah 4-3, also in Provo.

• UNLV SOFTBALL -- The Rebels got no-hit in a 4-0 loss to Utah in a Mountain West Conference game at Eller Media Stadium.

Utes starter Ashley Smuda (13-9) had five strikeouts and three walks, and Utah (22-19, 5-3 MWC) scored three runs in the third inning.

Heather Slettvet (2-9) took the loss for UNLV (21-25-1, 1-5).

• UNLV BASEBALL -- At Fort Worth, Texas, the Rebels mustered just two hits in a 12-1 loss to Texas Christian in Mountain West Conference play.

Scott Berke drew a two-out walk for UNLV (14-18, 5-6 MWC) in the seventh inning, and Braden Walker followed with a single -- breaking up a no-hitter -- to move Berke to third. Berke then scored on a throwing error.

The Horned Frogs racked up 13 hits, including two solo homers from Matt Carpenter and a three-run bomb from Jimmie Phar.
