Clausen starts for the Rebels
October 3, 2009 - 12:08 pm
RENO — Mike Clausen started at quarterback for UNLV today at UNR.
It wasn't a surprise because the decision on whether usual starter Omar Clayton would start was expected to come down to game day. Clayton has been bothered by an injured throwing shoulder, but is expected to play.
Both quarterbacks figure to have their chances to make plays. UNR is allowing 312 yards passing per game, No. 118 nationally.
But the Rebels could be hard-pressed to stop UNR quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who lit them up last season with five touchdowns on 240 yards rushing and 176 passing.
STILL OUT
Rebels wide receiver Rodelin Anthony was in sweats and will not play for the second week in a row because of a concussion. His absence in last week's 30-27 loss at Wyoming was noticeable without a third receiver stepping up to take pressure off Ryan Wolfe and Phillip Payne.
WINDY
The wind could be a factor for quarterbacks on both sides. It is blowing from the West at 23 mph with gusts around 40 mph.
FILING IN
Fans have started to make Mackay Stadium quite a bit more crowded than it was 20 minutes earlier. It looks as if about 25,000 fans are in attendance, including about 500 UNLV fans in one section of the stadium.
