UNLV golf team fades at regional; season in doubt

The UNLV men's golf team will need a big performance today to continue its season after a rough second round Friday in the 54-hole NCAA Regional at Greensboro, N.C.

The Rebels shot 16-over-par 304 at the Grandover Resort East Course and are 10th in the 14-team field at 21-over 597. The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championship beginning May 29 in Los Angeles.

UNLV trails Auburn and Lamar, who are tied for fourth, by nine shots. Liberty shot 5 over but maintained its first-round lead with a par 576 total, six strokes ahead of Southern Methodist. Florida is third, 10 shots off the lead.

No Rebel broke par, and each player had at least one double bogey. Sophomore Blake Biddle posted the team's best score for the second straight day, a 1-over 73, and is tied for fifth at 1-under 143. SMU's Matt Schovee leads at 137.

Junior Kevin Penner (76), freshman Carl Jonson (77), senior Derek Ernst (78) and freshman Kurt Kitayama (81) rounded out UNLV's scores. The top four scores are used to calculate the team result.
