UNLV men’s golf finishes fourth at BYU

The UNLV men's golf team, ranked fourth in the nation, capped a strong regular season with a fourth-place finish at the Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah.

Host Brigham Young took the team title Saturday, shooting 12-under 276 in the final round for a 14-under 850 total, five shots clear of Colorado State (855). UNLV shot 8-under 280 for a 4-under 860.

Kevin Penner led UNLV, shooting 3-under 69 to take fourth at 6-under 210, five strokes behind winner Zahkai Brown of Colorado State.

The Rebels, who have won five tournaments to rapidly climb the rankings, next play in the Mountain West Conference Championships beginning Friday at Tucson, Ariz.

■ UNLV BASEBALL - At Albuquerque, N.M., the Rebels gave up 11 runs in the first two innings, including a nine-run second, in a 16-5 Mountain West Conference loss to New Mexico.

Mark Shannon slugged a three-run homer for UNLV (20-23, 5-12) in the third inning.

■ UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS - At San Diego, the Rebels lost to San Diego State 4-1 in the Mountain West semifinals.

Aleksandra Josifoska gained the lone victory for the Rebels (16-9), at No. 2 singles. UNLV, ranked 48th, will now hope for an at-large bid to the 64-team NCAA Championships.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL - The Rebels gave up four runs in both the first and second innings, losing to Colorado State 8-0 in a Mountain West game at Eller Media Stadium.

Paige Emerson and Tayler Aleman had two hits apiece as the only players to connect for the Rebels (19-23, 0-5 MWC).

■ UNLV TRACK - At Irvine, Calif., Larissa Davis led the Rebels at the Steve Scott Invitational, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11 minutes, 37.03 seconds.

Deja Edwards finished second in the long jump with a personal best of 19 feet, 8 inches.

■ CSN BASEBALL - At Rangely, Colo., the College of Southern Nevada defeated Colorado Northwestern 6-4 and 6-5 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Morgan Stotts went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs in the opener, and the Coyotes (32-20, 19-17 SWAC) scored five first-inning runs in the second game.

■ CSN SOFTBALL - At Carson City, CSN swept Western Nevada 6-3 and 5-4 in a Scenic West doubleheader.

Desiree Laswell gained both wins, throwing a complete game in the opener and closing out the second game for the Coyotes (25-31, 20-24).
