UNLV baseball edges Tennessee in 14 innings

The UNLV baseball team capped a strong opening weekend with a 3-2, 14-inning victory over Tennessee on Sunday at Wilson Stadium. The Rebels took three of four games off their Southeastern Conference opponent.

Joey Swanner lifted the Rebels with an RBI single in the 14th, driving in Matt McCallister from second. Swanner stretched his hitting streak to 18 games.

McCallister got the game to extra innings with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.

Mark Shannon threw a solid seven innings for UNLV, allowing one run on two hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts. Relievers Tyler Iodence and Andy Beresford held the Vols scoreless in the five extra frames, with seven strikeouts and no walks.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — UNLV closed out its Easton Desert Classic with a 14-6, five-inning loss to Utah at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels gave up four runs in the second inning and six more in the third.

Heather Harrison went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for UNLV (5-5), and Tayler Aleman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
