UNLV takes lead at half
January 17, 2009 - 8:09 pm
Guard Wink Adams took over a back-and-forth game, his six-point spurt leading UNLV form a one-point deficit to a 31-26 lead. The Rebels turned that into a 39-32 halftime lead.
Adams put the Rebels in front 28-26 with a 3-pointer, and then made a fast-break layup and pumped his fist. He finished off the personal run with a drive to the basket that drew a foul. Adams made the first or two with 5:19 left.
He finished the first half 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Fellow guard Rene Rougeau had 10 points.
NOT SO SUPER
Wyoming guard Brandon Ewing entered this game on a roll, but took just two shots in the first half and scored two points. Guard Sean Ogirri instead had the hot hand, scoring 12 points by making 4 of 9 3-pointers.
CHIPPY
There was tension with 5:06 left when UNLV guard Tre'Von Willis and Wyoming forward Afam Muojeke started to go at each other. Nothing really happened, but both players received technical fouls.
POLITICS AND SPORTS
It's unusual to hear a political announcement of any kind at a sporting event, but there were pregame and halftime announcements about a student rally against Gov. Jim Gibbons' proposed budget cuts. UNLV President David Ashley even took the microphone on the court to support the rally.
