UNLV’s David Greene moves to running back

UNLV’s competition at running back became even tougher, with junior David Greene switching from safety.

He looked the part, too, rushing for two touchdowns in this morning’s scrimmage at Rebel Park.

“He was a really good running back in high school, and he’s played very well there this week,” coach Bobby Hauck said. “It’s the type of thing you get to do in spring practice. We really liked him as a running back out of high school. We’ve kind of shored our safety depth up a little bit, and so it was an opportunity to get a look at him there.”

Greene (6 feet, 200 pounds) is competing with four other backs for playing time. He said it was the coaches’ idea to make the move.

“The coaches asked me to do a job,” Greene said. “I actually like it.”

Also, UNLV signed kicker Johnathan Leiva (5-11, 180). He made all 22 extra points and 7 of 9 field goals last season at Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif. Leiva’s longest field goal was from 48 yards, and his two misses were between 40 and 49 yards.
