Unruh propels Faith Lutheran

Terry Unruh struck out seven over five innings and had two hits to lead Faith Lutheran's baseball team to a 13-3 win over visiting Moapa Valley in the first game of a best-of-3 Class 3A Southern League playoff series.

Unruh went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Daniel Ward had two hits, an RBI and a run for the Crusaders (12-20).

Kevin Cardinal doubled twice for Moapa Valley (14-17).

Virgin Valley 7, Boulder City 2 -- At Mesquite, Anthony Morris was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run, and Jason Wittwer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run to lead the Bulldogs (24-6) past the Eagles (9-19) to open a best-of-3 Class 3A Southern League series.

Terran Leavitt went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for Virgin Valley.

Both Class 3A series resume at 10 a.m. today and continue at 1 p.m. if necessary, with the series winners advancing to the state playoffs.

Indian Springs 10, Pahranagat Valley 4 -- At Alamo, Roger Ashley's bases-loaded double helped the Thunderbirds beat the Panthers to reach the 1A Southern Region title game.

Indian Springs plays Lake Mead at 10 a.m. today. If the Thunderbirds win, a second game would be played to determine the champion.

Indian Springs 14, Tonopah 11 -- At Alamo, Matt Johnson homered as the Thunderbirds defeated the Muckers.

SOFTBALL

Boulder City 10, Moapa Valley 0 -- At Boulder City, Karlee Koopman pitched a five-inning three-hitter, and Paxton Fleming went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI to lead the Eagles (29-3) over the Pirates (7-19) in the first game of their best-of-3 Class 3A Southern League series.

Brittany Patt was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, and Megan Snyder and Ali Rants each went 2-for-3.

Faith Lutheran 14, Virgin Valley 4 -- At Faith Lutheran, Kaitlyn Patterson had a triple, a double and five RBIs to help the Crusaders (15-15) blow out Virgin Valley (8-21) to open a best-of-3 Class 3A Southern League series.

Winning pitcher Kellie Kersey went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, helping Faith Lutheran rally from a 3-0 first-inning deficit. The Crusaders led 5-4 before scoring eight runs in the third.

Both Class 3A series resume at 10 a.m. today and continue at 1 p.m. if necessary, with the series winners advancing to the state playoffs.

Pahranagat Valley 23, Lake Mead 5 -- At Alamo, Pahranagat Valley (17-8-1) scored 20 times in its last three at-bats after erasing deficits of 3-0 and 5-3 to defeat the Eagles and reach the Class 1A Southern Region title game.

Chanae Canning and Kyla Mortensen went 2-for-3 for the Panthers. Roxie Lasike was 2-for-4 with a double, and Stevie Horrocks added a home run.

Addie Canning overcame early control problems to strike out 11 for the Panthers.

Indian Springs 8, Tonopah 4 -- At Alamo, Brandi Bryl hit a two-run homer in the first inning and pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts as Indian Springs eliminated Tonopah (7-11) from the Class 1A Southern Region tournament.

The Muckers scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead, but Indian Springs responded with three in the bottom of the inning and three in the fifth.

Lake Mead 5, Indian Springs 4 -- At Alamo, Lynzee Freund pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and went 2-for-4 to carry the Eagles (14-15-1) past Indian Springs (11-10) in an elimination game.

Lake Mead will play Pahranagat Valley for the title today. The Eagles must win twice to win the tournament.

Tina Traster went 2-for-4 with a double for the Thunderbirds. Bryl pitched a six-hitter and had seven strikeouts.
