Uruguay’s 3-pointers too much for Mexico

Nicolas Mazzarino scored 36 points, including a tournament-best eight 3-pointers, as Uruguay beat Mexico 91-82 on Sunday in the opening round of the FIBA Americas Championship.
The 6-foot Mazzarino matched Brazil's Leandro Barbosa for the highest point total in the tournament, which will decide two berths in the Beijing Olympics.
Esteban Batista had 25 points and 15 rebounds for Uruguay (3-1), which finished second in its five-team pool. Former UNLV player Romel Beck had 28 points for Mexico (1-3), which advanced to the second round as the No. 4 seed from its pool.
• Venezuela 100, U.S. Virgin Islands 90 -- Greivis Vasquez and Hector Romero had near triple-doubles to lead Venezuela into the second round. Vasquez, who will be a sophomore at Maryland, had 18 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds against the U.S. Virgin Islands (0-4), while Romero had 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Venezuela (1-3), which finished fourth in its five-team pool.
• Argentina 109, Puerto Rico 92, OT -- Argentina erased a nine-point deficit during the last four minutes of regulation and dominated overtime to oust Panama (1-3) from the tournament.
Paolo Quinteros had seven of his 22 points in overtime for Argentina (4-0), which finished as the top seed in its five-team pool. Gary Forbes, who plays for Massachusetts, had 29 points for Panama.
