Weather alters local soccer schedule
A temperature forecast of 108 degrees for this afternoon led U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships officials to alter the schedule for today's quarterfinal matches being played in northwest Las Vegas.
All games today had been scheduled to be played at the Bettye Wilson Sports Complex, but that would have required some teams to start play as late as 1 p.m.
Event chairman Guy Hobbs said Thursday that tournament officials opted to move some games today to the Kellogg Zaher Soccer Complex, the site of about half the qualifying games played Monday through Wednesday.
The change means no games will be played this afternoon. Thursday was a day off for teams.
Teams advanced after three days of qualifying to reach the single-elimination rounds. Today's winners advance to compete Saturday, with championship games scheduled for Sunday.
Regional winners earn spots in the July 24-29 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships near Dallas.
Seven Southern Nevada teams join two reigning national champions in the quarterfinals.
Neusport Green and Vegas United play at 7 a.m. today in the boys under-13 division. The under-15 boys team from Las Vegas Premier plays at 9 a.m. and the Premier under-18 boys at 11 a.m.
In girls divisions, Neusport FC95 Green of Las Vegas faces Vegas Vengeance Select at 9 a.m. in under 12. Neusport Tabagators under 16 play at 7 a.m.
The under-16 boys Real So Cal, led by goalie Elmer Avelar, have won the past two national titles.
In under-16 girls, Real Colorado Nationals have advanced after winning the national title a year ago in the under-15 category.
