Wild uprising in ninth dooms 51s in loss to Sky Sox
A well-pitched Pacific Coast League game Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs, Colo., turned decidedly wild in the ninth inning as the host Sky Sox rallied past the 51s, 3-2.
Las Vegas reliever Jim Hoey uncorked three two-out wild pitches in the ninth, with the third sending home Jimmy Cesario from third base with the winning run.
Cesario hit a two-out single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch to the next batter, Tommy Field. Hoey (0-1) threw another wild pitch on his fourth ball to Field, putting runners at the corners. Cesario then scored when the 1-and-2 pitch to Brandon Wood was wild.
Each starting pitcher, Las Vegas' Scott Richmond and Colorado Springs' Alex White, allowed two runs on six hits, with Richmond working seven innings and White five. Richmond struck out four and walked one, and White struck out five and walked none.
Sky Sox relievers Mike Ekstrom and Edgmer Escalona (2-0) each worked two scoreless innings, combining to hold the 51s (3-7) to one hit while fanning five.
D.J. LeMahieu went 3-for-4, including an RBI double in the first, to extend his hitting streak to eight games for the Sky Sox (5-5). Andrew Brown led off the Colorado Springs seventh with a tying homer.
Las Vegas scored on RBI singles by Travis Snider in the first inning and Anthony Gose in the fifth.
