Wildcats catcher Harper gets international experience

Las Vegas High baseball standout Bryce Harper has taken his considerable skills to the national level.

A first-team all-state pick as a freshman catcher in the spring, Harper is playing for the USA Baseball 16-U National Team at the Pan Am Championships in Mexico.

Harper, playing the outfield, is hitting third for Team USA. Through three games at the Pan Am Championships, Harper was 10-for-18 with three home runs and 14 RBIs.

He also has pitched a scoreless inning.

The tournament runs through Sunday.

DURANGO FALL CLASSIC -- The annual Durango Fall Classic girls volleyball tournament takes place Friday and Saturday, with some of the nation's top teams scheduled to compete.

This year's 32-team field features 12 teams ranked in the top 100 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com.

Four teams are ranked in the top 10, led by No. 1 La Costa Canyon (Calif.).

Second-ranked Archbishop Mitty (Calif.), No. 6 Lake Wood (Calif.) and No. 8 Mira Costa (Calif.) also are in the event.

Nine local teams also are scheduled to participate. In addition to Durango, Bishop Gorman, Coronado, Foothill, Green Valley, Palo Verde and Silverado are set to play.

Competition begins at 3 p.m. Friday at Durango and Green Valley. Play continues at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at both sites, with the Championship and Silver divisions playing at Durango, and the Bronze and Competition divisions at Green Valley.

The championship match is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Durango.
