Raising Cane's locations to collect
cell Phones for soldiers

Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers locations in the Las Vegas Valley will be collecting gently used mobile phones and donations for Cell Phones for Soldiers and local military members during May.

On Memorial Day, May 30, all of the profits and collected phones will be donated to Cell Phones for Soldiers, a nonprofit group dedicated to providing free calls home to U.S. armed forces. The USO, a nonprofit organization that works to life the spirits of America's troops and their families, plans to distribute calling cards through its Las Vegas center.

Brio, AFAN raise $8,000 at charity event

Brio Tuscan Grille at Tivoli Village at Queensridge hosted a charity reception for Aid for AIDS of Nevada on April 27 that raised $8,000 in ticket and raffle sales. More than 400 guests attended. Entertainment was provided by local musician Jeremy James.

Taste of the Nation coming
to the Palms Thursday

Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation Las Vegas is planned for Thursday at Rain Nightclub inside the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road.

The event will feature Las Vegas' hottest chefs and mixologists and more than 35 restaurants pairing cuisine with signature cocktails to raise funds to fight childhood hunger.

Learn to roll sushi at Hachi

Hachi Modern Japanese, inside Red Rock Resort at 11011 W. Charleston Blvd., offers monthly sushi rolling classes. The next one is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Wine Walk to raise funds
for New Vista Community

A Wine Walk to benefit New Vista Community is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Town Square Las Vegas, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

New Vista Community is a nonprofit group that provides equal opportunities and support for intellectually challenged people of all ages.

Fleming's adds new items to menu

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, 8721 W. Charleston Blvd., has introduced two new entree salads to its menu, reinvented the classic shrimp cocktail and lightened its scallop offering.

The menu now features the Steakhouse Cobb salad entree, the seared New Bedford scallops entree and a shrimp cocktail appetizer.

The Steakhouse Cobb salad features Maine lobster or filet mignon tossed with romaine lettuce, blue cheese, crisp bacon, tomato and avocado, along with white mushrooms and asparagus. The salad with lobster comes with tarragon ranch dressing, while the filet mignon option comes with signature red onion balsamic dressing.

The seared New Bedford scallops entree features four to five large scallops, lightly seasoned with a spice blend and finished with Meyer lemon oil-honey glaze. The entree is garnished with shaved young green beans, asparagus and baby carrots in lemon balsamic dressing.

The shrimp cocktail has three large fresh shrimp on a bed of crushed ice, served tableside with signature tomato horseradish sauce in a silver shaker. A touch of Grey Goose vodka is added before shaking.

Barbecue championships coming
to The Orleans this weekend

The USA Barbecue Championships and food festival are planned for Saturday and Sunday at The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.

More than 100 of the world's top-ranked professional grilling teams, including those representing 43 states, six teams from Canada and one from Tokyo, will vie for their piece of the largest barbecue purse, totaling $125,000 in prizes.

The competition will feature four categories: brisket, chicken, ribs and pork butt. Local barbecue teams Trailhound Smoker BBQ, Sin City Smokers and The Smokin' B.A.R. are set to compete from the South for a top prize of $25,000.

The event also will feature professional and amateur barbecue cook-offs, barbecue vendors, an expo, live music and a kids' play zone. The UNLV Ribba Ramma Amateur Rib Cook-Off also is planned on the event grounds, and for a $10 donation, attendees can sample ribs, with all donations supporting athletics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit orleansarena.com.

Appetizers (choice of one) are classic Caesar salad, Fleming's salad, The Wedge and chef's seasonal soup. Entrees (choice of one) are petite filet mignon, New York strip, double chicken breast and tuna mignon. Carl's Jr. partners with March of Dimes, Las Vegas 51s for fundraisers

Carl's Jr. locations across the Las Vegas Valley are collecting donations for the March of Dimes through Monday.

Any customer who donates $1 will receive a special cutout to sign and display, along with food coupons. Last year Carl's Jr. raised $40,000 for the organization, which supports research, awareness programs, local hospitals and families affected by the outcomes of premature births.

Carl's Jr. also is partnering with the Las Vegas 51s baseball team. While supplies last, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson locations are giving one ticket to a 51s game to customers for free, upon request, with the purchase of any large combo. The 51s also are selling a Family Four Pack with four game tickets, four Carl's Jr. $4 food coupons and four 51s hats for $36.

Wine radio show host Les Kincaid and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas plan to present a series of wine and cooking classes from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on select dates in May.

Summer Salads is scheduled for today and May 24 at the Ferguson Bath & Kitchen Gallery. Learn how to transform fresh vegetables and lettuce into dishes that are healthy, tasty and easy to prepare.

Springs Cafe hosting SUnday brunch

The Springs Cafe at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd., plans to host an a la carte brunch every Sunday through June from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The cost is $21 for adults, $12.50 for children ages 4 to 12 and free for children 3 or younger. Coffee and soda are included.

Springs Preserve members receive 10 percent off the brunches.
