On this day in 1775 Patrick Henry appeared before the Second Virginia Convention meeting in St. John’s Church in Williamsburg and advocated creating a volunteer militia in every county in Virginia.
He ended with the resounding demand: "Give me liberty, or give me death!"
Less than a month later, the shot heard ’round the world rang out in Lexington.
These many years later, such words are seldom heard.
