ABC News posts more previews of Doug Hampton interview
ABC News posted more previews of its upcoming Nightline interview with Doug Hampton, whose wife, Cindy, had an affair with Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.
Both Hamptons were employees of Ensign and Doug Hampton has sought to tell his story to major national media outlets.
In addition to the affair details, Nightline delves into Hampton's allegations that Ensign sought to minimize fallout of the scandal by helping Hampton get lobbying work, a possible violation of the law.
Hampton says, "there is no doubt in my mind," Ensign's senate position was the reason Hampton got work in government consulting.
"Why would a client hire Doug Hampton if he didn't think he was going to have access to John Ensign's office," he says.
Also, Hampton says neither the Senate Ethics Committee, the Department of Justice nor the FBI have sought him out for questioning, suggesting the authorities responsible for preventing officials from abusing power aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing.
Hampton says the authorities are, "Not really interested in getting to the bottom of this."
It is an example, Hampton says, of how rules don't always apply to people in powerful government positions.
"When you are campaigning, boy you have to talk about everything. When you are elected you don't have to talk about anything," Hampton said.
