An all-time favorite
You ever read one of those books where when you are finished with it you're a little sad?
Wally Lamb's "I Know This Much is True" is one of those books for me.
Dominick Birdsey narrates the novel, which is packed so full of story it's hard to know where to begin to sum it up.
Dominick has a twin brother, Thomas, who is a paranoid schizophrenic. Dominick both loves and hates his brother at times as he tries to care for him and keep him safe.
Dominick tells of their childhood with their abusive adoptive father, and the reader follows as he tries to uncover his roots through his grandfather's memoir.
The book is full of likable and despicable people. But it's Dominick's relationship with his brother that really pulls at readers' hearts. The compassion I felt for both men made this book haunting and overwhelmingly touching.
Wally Lamb has such a gift for character development that I missed Dominick and Thomas when I finished the book.
This book is definitely in my top 10.
