Andre Agassi Explains Obstacle To Vegas’ Getting A Sports Team
There’s always some rumor or another that Las Vegas will get its own NBA team or some other professional sports outfit. But Las Vegas native Andre Agassi points out the main obstacle.
Pro sports teams “tend to [do well] in cities that are huge — where a small demographic can support a particular event — or places where it’s such a small city, there’s not a heck of a lot else to do,” Agassi says.
“In this town, I consider it a bit of a ‘tweener. We’re not so huge that a small pocket can sustain it, and there’s a big competition for entertainment.”
What I don’t understand is, why can’t a team play in a tourist hall, like the MGM Grand Garden Arena? Why can’t a tennis championship go down at the Mandalay Bay Events Center? Agassi sets me straight.
“Yeah, but think about it,” he says. “You’re taking a week of [booking time away from] an arena. When you put that on [paper], that doesn’t make sense.”
Agassi's "Grand Slam for Children" goes down at the Wynn Saturday. For more on that, check out this.
