Anti-Obama DVD sparks newspaper sales — NOT!

As you may know, last Friday the Review-Journal inserted a paid political DVD against Barack Obama. All of the television stations and local pundits did stories on the DVD. Before the DVD was inserted, we received a handful of complaints from readers (most of them appeared to come from a common source). For my take on the attempt to censor the ad, see my Sunday column here

Now for the rest of the story.

On Friday morning in less that two hours, virtually all of our single copy newspapers were purchased. Were the Obama "brownshirts" buying up the newspapers to keep Las Vegans from seeing the DVD?

Not exactly. The DVD hardly caused a stir from a sales standpoint.

It turns out that on the same day the Review-Journal contained a hot coupon book from Coast Casinos. It caused a run on Review-Journals in stores and single-copy racks. We sold every Review-Journal we printed that day.

There's a lesson in there somewhere. Maybe it's this: Politics are one thing, but don't get between a Review-Journal reader and his coupon bargains.
