Lane restrictions are scheduled through early April on Rainbow Boulevard between Gowan Road and Red Coach Avenue, the city of Las Vegas said.

The restrictions will be in effect on a 24-hour basis as part of a pavement preventative maintenance project to extend the life of the heavily traveled roadway. On Rainbow Boulevard, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on a 24-hour basis, city officials said.

Rainbow Boulevard should return to full access when the improvements are completed. The five-week project began March 7.

Southern Nevada Paving is the contractor. City of Las Vegas Department of Operations and Maintenance personnel are managing the project.

Police seek public comment
during re-accreditation process

The Metropolitan Police Department is asking for public input during its
wre-accrediation process.

Assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement are set to be in Las Vegas from Saturday through Tuesday to conduct an in-depth review of all aspects of the department's management, operations and support services. The re-accreditation process takes place every five years.

Residents can comment in person at the Clark County Commission meeting set for 6 p.m. Monday at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. Comments can be made by telephone from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday by calling 828-3023. Residents also can mail comments to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc., 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, VA, 20155.

31 recruits join police department

A graduation ceremony was planned on March 24 to welcome 31 recruits into the Metropolitan Police Department's ranks.

The ceremony was set at The Orleans showroom, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.

The new officers were scheduled to fill positions created through attrition, the department said.

Hispanic Citizens Police Academy
offered by Las Vegas, North Las Vegas

The Metropolitan and North Las Vegas police departments are teaming up to offer a Hispanic Citizens Academy.

This is the eighth such academy for the Metropolitan Police Department and the first for North Las Vegas' department.

The purpose of the academy is to get Hispanic citizens involved in crime-fighting efforts and allow them to meet officers from both departments. Topics include gang awareness, narcotics, domestic violence, sexual assault prevention and 911/311 procedures.

The first meeting of the academy was March 16 at the Pearson Community Center, 1624 W. Carey Ave. in North Las Vegas.

The academy marks the first time two law enforcement agencies have joined forces for such a cause.

Safe business practices class
to be offered on April 21

The Metropolitan Police Department's Northwest Area Command plans to host a Safe Business Partnership class twice in April at its facility, 9850 W. Cheyenne Ave.

The first session is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon April 21, and the second is set for 1 to 4 p.m. April 28.

The class will be an overview of safe business practices and will include free training materials. Participants will learn how to prevent and respond to crime at their businesses.

The program is free for property managers, store managers and on-site security personnel, but seating is limited, and RSVPs are required.
