AROUND TOWN: Get a free glaucoma screening next week

In honor of Glaucoma Awareness Month, Vision Source will offer free glaucoma screenings Jan. 19-24 at the organization's 12 locations throughout Las Vegas and Henderson.

Diagnosis is the first step in the prevention of the eye disease that causes more than 12 percent of cases of blindness nationwide and is the leading cause of blindness in African Americans. Hispanics are also at an increased risk of developing glaucoma, Vision Source data shows.

Glaucoma is characterized by increased fluid pressure in the eyes that can eventually damage the optic nerve. This can lead to a slow loss of vision and, eventually, blindness. The disease exhibits no symptoms, and the increased eye pressure caused by glaucoma causes no pain. Though there is no cure, an early diagnosis can prevent further loss of vision.

Screenings will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. For a list of offices, visit www.visionsourcevegas.com, or call 800-393-7911.
