AROUND TOWN: Not your ordinary cupcakes offered at Retro Bakery
Centennial Hills residents are finding the window at Retro Bakery a hard one to pass by.
The bright decor of the small neighborhood business, 7785 N. Durango Drive, Suite 130, is the first thing to catch the eye in the tiny
shopping center on Durango and Farm Road. Or maybe it's the owner's matching yellow Volkswagen bug parked out front. But the real attraction here is the display case housing a wide variety of flavors of fresh-baked-that-day cupcakes.
These aren't your ordinary cakes, either. If you're in the mood for breakfast, try the Glazed Donut, vanilla cake soaked in doughnut glaze, or the Short Stack, cupcakes infused with maple syrup and topped with maple buttercream frosting. Or try the most popular flavor, Hop Scotch, with a pile of butterscotch ganache-dipped buttercream on top that will remind you of a dipped cone from Dairy Queen a few doors down.
Baker Kari Haskell says once somebody stops in their tracks and peeks inside to see what Retro is about, they usually leave with a cupcake in hand. The bakery is open every day but Monday and has a cool Web site with updates on new flavors.
