AROUND TOWN: Several school-related events this week are open to the public
There are several school-related events happening this week that are open to the public.
Guest Speaker at CSN
Author Antonia Juhasz will discuss the breadth and power of the oil industry at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 in the Nicholas J. Horn Theatre, at the College of Southern Nevada’s Cheyenne campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.
Juhasz, the author of “The Tyranny of Oil,” is director of the newly established Chevron Program at , a San Francisco-based, human rights, nonprofit organization. She is a policy analyst, award-winning author and activist.
The CSN Capitol Club, a non-partisan student group that strives to engage students in matters of public policy, is sponsoring Juhasz’s visit.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will include a question-and-answer session with Juhasz.
Paralympic Sport Club activity
The public is invited to a paralympic sport club activity night in celebration of disability awareness night, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 14 at Garside Middle School, 300 S. Torrey Pines Drive. The event will feature beep baseball, wheelchair over the line softball, tennis and boccia ball. In addition, there will be a parent training available about growing up with a disability.

UNLV Music concert
The UNLV Department of Music presents “A Night in Old Vienna,” a concert featuring faculty and students, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15 in the Doc Rando Recital Hall of the Beam Music Center on the UNLV campus, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. The concert is free and open to the public, and includes greeters in period costume and traditional Viennese pastries.
The “A Night in Old Vienna” program features the music of Brahms, Richard Strauss, Johann Straus II and Schoenberg.
Great clothing swap
Las Vegas Valley Homeschool Network is holding its first annual Great Clothing Swap from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the LDS Viking Chapel and Recreation Hall, 3901 E. Viking Road.
You can donate, you can donate and swap or you can volunteer. All volunteers will receive a letter acknowledging their part in the event.
All clothing accepted for men, women, children and babies. Hats, costumes, belts and purses too will be accepted, but no shoes. Any left over clothing will be donated to charity.
Lummis to host fall festival
Lummis Elementary School, 9000 Hillpoint Road, is hosting its annual fall festival Spooktacular from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 17. There is no entry fee, and there will be games and prizes available as well as a haunted house, costume contest and food.
