As incumbent, Gibbons gets exposure not available to other candidates

Gov. Jim Gibbons on Tuesday showed why he won't have to raise as much campaign cash as his opponents to be competitive in a Republican primary.

Gibbons, whose favorable rating is below 20 percent, recorded and posted his first podcast since May 7, online.

As the incumbent, Gibbons has the power to make speeches from his office that get attention another candidate might not.

The latest Gibbons video features statements that could double as campaign rhetoric.

When talking about how Nevada could recover from the recession, he says, "I've never backed down from a fight or surrendered in my life and I do not intend to start now."

Later he said, "If we all work together and move in the same direction we can get Nevada back on the top of every good economic measurement list there is, the way it was before the recession."

Gibbons will get another boost from his status as incumbent if he calls the legislature to Carson City for a special session. The session will put Gibbons at the top of newscasts statewide, which is the kind of television exposure his opponents would have to buy in the form of commercials.
