California taxpayer revolt: Just substitute “Nevada”
May 21, 2009 - 7:41 am
May I recommend this editorial from the Orange County Register for your reading this morning. It sounds the warning well -- and not just for California but for all states that cannot control spending. In fact, you can pretty much substitute "Nevada" for "California" and tell the future for the Silver State.
"California (Nevada) runs an enormous deficit because legislators can't stop expanding government, and the main beneficiaries are government employees and retirees."
This is the truth. Legislators -- most of whom are financially over their head when it comes to grappling with a big state budget -- don't know what to do other than raise taxes. That, over time, produces an unsustainable situation that eventually ends in taxpayer revolt.
California voters are there. Nevadans aren't far behind. For a daily guide to the meltdown, try this site. I recommend all Nevada legislators read it. Believe it. Avoid it.
