Cancer Institute offers affordable mammograms

It's not all fun and games in Your Town. Sometimes it's important.

For example: The Nevada Cancer Institute is offering $50 screening mammograms to women older than 40 between now and May 16. The institute's goal is to make mammograms affordable for women who do not have insurance. Those who do have insurance will be billed in the normal manner.

"Breast cancer is the leading cancer in women, and the second-leading cause of cancer-related death in women," said Dr. Phillip Manno, chief of clinical oncology and hermatology services at the institute. "When breast cancer is detected early and appropriately treated, it is highly curable."

Early detection is the key, yet an estimated 30 percent of Nevada women have not had a mammogram within the past two years. The American Cancer Institute recommends a yearly mammogram after age 40.
