FREE TAX PREPARATION OFFERED
AARP plans to host free tax form preparation for those older than 50 from Feb. 4 through April 11 at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center , 6601 N. Buffalo Drive.

GRIEF AND LOSS SUPPORT GROUP SET
The Centennial Hills Active Adult Center , 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, plans to host a grief and loss support group for those older than 50 from 9 to 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

CLASS TO FOCUS ON GROWING HERBS, VEGETABLES AN FRUIT IN SMALL PLACES
Ward 6 Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross and Angela O'Callaghan of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension plan to offer a free class from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 23 at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs , 9200 Tule Springs Road.

TREE-CARE SEMINARS PLANNED
The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension plans professional tree care seminars in English and in Spanish at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.
Topics are to include: Palm Problems that Aren't Soils, Mulches, and Fertilizers; Proven Choices for Trees in Southern Nevada; Staking and Pruning - The First Seven Years; Prominent Diseases of Trees in Southern Nevada; and Insect Problems in Tress of Southern Nevada.
The English language seminar is set for Feb. 1, and the Spanish language seminar Feb . 8. The sessions are scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with early registration set for 6 a.m.
Hands-on sessions are planned from 2 to 3:30 p.m., covering pruning roses , palms , shrubs and trees or pruning ground covers/grasses.
The cost of the full-day seminar, which includes handouts, beverages and lunch, is $15 for those who pre register and $20 at the door.

HEALTH DISTRICT URGES RESIDENTS
TO GET FLU SHOTS
The Southern Nevada Health District reminds valley residents to get vaccinated for influenza.
Southern Nevada experienced moderate influenza activity Jan. 11, but the district expected cases to increase locally.
The influenza season typically peaks in Southern Nevada in January or February, and immunization is the best method to prevent illness, the district said.

PUBLIC TELESCOPE CLINIC PLANNED SATURDAY AT RED ROCK CANYON
The Las Vegas Astronomical Society plans to host a public telescope clinic at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive.
The event is set to begin with solar observing through special white light and hydrogen-alpha-filtered telescopes to see sunspots on the sun's surface and solar prominences around the sun's edge.
Society members will provide assistance for those who need help using telescopes.
A beginning astronomy presentation is planned at 4:30 p.m. in the Visitor Center. Viewing of the night sky will immediately follow the presentation, and a laser-guided tour of the night sky is set for 6:30 p.m.
Visitors must be in the park before the gates close at 5 p.m.
