ELECTION TO RECALL COUNCILMAN ROSS SCHEDULED FOR END OF JANUARY

Unregistered city of Las Vegas voters in Ward 6 who wish to cast a ballot in a special election to recall Councilman Steve Ross can register in person at the city clerk's office through Saturday.

The special recall election is planned for Jan. 31, with early voting taking place Jan. 26-27.

The city clerk's office, on the first floor of Las Vegas City Hall, 400 Stewart Ave., is open for extended hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

In December, local and state elections officials certified 1,105 signatures that were amassed in a successful recall petition circulated by the Committee to Recall Steve Ross. The state requires 1,083 signatures to initiate a recall election. The Committee to Recall Steve Ross had failed last summer to collect the required number of signatures.

All classes are scheduled for 9 a.m. and repeat each hour until noon at 7700 Horse Drive in North Las Vegas.

The topic for Saturday is fertilizing fruit trees and pest control; Jan. 21's class covers figs, pomegranates and persimmons; and Jan. 28's topic is almonds and pistachios.

The orchard is about 100 yards east of the intersection of North Decatur Boulevard and Horse Drive. Take Interstate 15 or U.S. Highway 95 north to the Las Vegas Beltway and exit at Decatur Boulevard going north. Horse Drive is about 3½ miles north of the Beltway exit.

RECYCLE CHRISTMAS TREES
THROUGH Sunday

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is partnering with community organizations for the annual Christmas tree recycling program.

Drop off Christmas trees for free at more than 20 drop sites through Sunday. Remove all objects, such as lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments and nails. Foreign objects contaminate the mulch and damage the chipper. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.

Last year, Southern Nevada residents recycled more than 15,000 trees. Since 2001, residents have recycled approximately 100,000 Christmas trees or the equivalent of more than 12,600 cubic yards of solid waste, which was diverted from the landfill to a beneficial use.

For more information and drop sites, visit cdsn.org.
