DISCOVER NOCTURNAL ANIMAL LIFE SATURDAY DURING TWILIGHT HIKE
Explore the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area at dusk with a naturalist during a twilight hike planned for 5:30 p.m. Saturday on Mount Charleston.
The free hikes are open to the public and appropriate for the whole family.
The twilight hike explores how nocturnal animals thrive. The group will meet at McWilliams Campground.

ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY PLANS
GRAND OPENING THURSDAY
Silver Sky at Deer Springs, an assisted living facility for low-income seniors, plans to host its grand opening from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at its 90-bed center, 6741 N. Decatur Blvd.
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Ward 6 City Councilman Steve Ross are slated to attend.
Tours are set to start at 9 a.m., and a formal ribbon-cutting is to follow at
10:30 a.m. A lunch is planned for 11:30 a.m.
Silver Sky is available to qualified seniors 62 or older. The assisted living facility welcomed its first resident in April, and now 28 men and women call it home.

ROSS NAMED PRESIDENT OF NEVADA
LEAGUE OF CITIES AND MUNICIPALITIES
Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross, Ward 6, was elected the new president of the Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities at the league's annual meeting in Mesquite during the first week of October.
The Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities is organized for cities around the state to band together to work on common concerns and problems. It reflects the goals of the national organization, the National League of Cities.
Other elected officers are from Henderson, West Wendover, Gardnerville, North Las Vegas and Reno.
HORSES4HEROES WELCOMES
NONMILITARY MEMBERSHIP
Horses4Heroes, a horseback riding organization made affordable for first responders, military troops, veterans, wounded military personnel and their families, is opening membership to all families who want to ride horses.
Friends of Horses4Heroes can join for a one-time fee of $100 per family.
The program focuses on all aspects of horse care, including ground fundamentals and riding.
English and Western riding disciplines are offered, as is beginning rodeo and gymkhana (barrel racing, pole bending, dummy roping, goat tying). All ages and all riding levels are welcome.
Members receive Horses4Heroes T-shirts, a membership badge and a directory of instructors, riding facilities, retailers and other businesses that support the organization.
Horses4Heroes members are eligible for discounted riding lessons from local instructors.

BUSES OFFER DOOR-TO-DOOR
SERVICE FOR SENIORS
Seniors living in Centennial Hills can let the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada do the driving for them when traveling within the Centennial Hills service area, two days a week.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, door-to-door senior transportation service is available to anywhere within the service area.
The commission's Centennial Hills Flexible Demand Response senior transportation service will take residents to any destination within the Flexible Demand Response service area.
For 50 cents a ride, seniors will be able to travel within the service area, two days each week.
Call 228-7433 to register and schedule rides. Rides should be scheduled up to three days in advance of traveling.
HAUNTED POTLUCK PLANNED

Members of the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, can act like boys and ghouls during a Halloween potluck planned for 11:30 a.m. Monday at the center.

The Buddhist Psychotherapy Institute of Las Vegas has opened at 810 S. Durango Drive, Suite 102.
Buddhist psychotherapy is aimed at expanding one's capacity for joy and improving one's ability to relate to others while reducing suffering, cultivating compassion and allowing one to accept the current moment as it is, according to the institute. No knowledge of Buddhism is necessary.

HEALING HEROES GOLF TOURNAMENT COMING TO RED ROCK COUNTRY CLUB
Red Rock Country Club plans to host a fundraiser golf tournament to benefit Healing Heroes Network Nov. 2 at its facility, 2250 Red Springs Road. Check-in is scheduled to begin at 7:15 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
HHN is a nonprofit organization that helps returning veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq.
Individual players pay $125, and teams are $500. The fee includes 18 holes of golf, a driving range, lunch, a silent auction and various prizes.

HEALTH DISTRICT ANNOUNCES HEALTH HOLIDAY CHALLENGE
The Southern Nevada Health District announces its Get Healthy Holiday Challenge, a web-based program offering a weekly challenge and tools to track progress through the holidays.
Each week a healthy challenge email will be distributed to encourage lifestyle changes, such as a daily 15-minute walk or eating three servings of vegetables a day. The program also will provide weekly tips, recipes, an interactive blog, prizes and more. The site also includes information and resources for a healthier lifestyle.

WESTSIDE NEWCOMERS SEEK NEW MEMBERS
The Westside Newcomers Club plans to host a coffee event for prospective members in the Social Hall at Desert Spring United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive, at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2. A luncheon with program is planned for Nov. 9.
The social club is for women who have lived in the area for 10 years or less or for those who have experienced life-changing events, such as retirement.
