Code Council names 2008 members

The International Code Council, Southern Nevada Chapter recently installed members of the 2008 board of directors.

The 2008 officers are: President Fulton Cochran and First Vice President Michael Bouse, of the Henderson Building and Fire Safety Department; Second Vice President Neil Burning of the Clark County Building Division; and secretary/treasurer Paul Curry of the city of North Las Vegas Building Department.

In a historic move, the chapter last year amended its bylaws to allow the first non-governmental members to serve on the board of directors.

The ICC Bylaws Committee recognized the chapter needed to give industry members a larger role in leadership and better utilize their experience in the industry, Cochran said. Therefore, the adoption of a revision to the chapter's bylaws included two, new executive board positions for industry members.

The new industry members of the board of directors are: Connie Suckling of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association and Bill Laub of Southwest Gas Corp.

"The chapter is extremely fortunate to have such capable people willing to step into the executive board," Cochran said.

"Both Bill Laub and Connie Suckling are industry professionals who exemplify the team working spirit that is essential in construction regulation. Their election reflects the chapter's philosophy that we are the builder's partner and not just a regulator."

"We believe the inclusion of these outstanding industry professionals on the board further enhances the strong working relationship between the private sector and government on code issues," said Irene Porter, executive director of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association. "This working relationship and knowledge assist in providing quality construction for the consumer."

In related news, Ron Lynn, building official and director of Clark County Development Services, was elected the secretary/treasurer of the International Code Council board of directors. He has been an ICC board member since 2004.
