Comedian Dennis Miller to headline fundraiser for Angle in Vegas

Who says politics isn't funny?

Comedian Dennis Miller plans to headline a fundraiser for U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle this Saturday night in Las Vegas.
The private event for Sen. Harry Reid's Republican challenger will be at the Orleans Hotel & Casino, west of the Las Vegas Strip.

Angle is scheduled to tout the fundraiser on Wednesday when she'll call into Miller's radio show, according to her campaign.

Miller is a former Saturday Night Live cast member and "weekend update" anchor on the show.

The comedian calls himself a libertarian, but he has taken on more conservative stances since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. After the attrack, Miller became one of the Hollywood celebrities who backed the war in Iraq and then-President George W. Bush.

Now, he's a regular commentator on Fox News and is supporting Angle in her race to defeat the Democratic incumbent Reid.

Angle also is planning to attend a fundraiser Friday in Los Angeles as she reaches out to the conservative celebrity set.

"There is growing support among Hollywood conservatives for Sharron," said Jarrod Agen, communications director for her campaign.

The Angle campaign didn't provide details of the fundraisers, including how many people are expected and how much money might be raised.

Singer and actor Pat Boone, a leader of the conservative entertainment community, came to Las Vegas last week to help Angle raise money.

Last Sunday, Boone organized a Tea Party rally of several hundred people in Beverly Hills.

Those attending included "Hollywood producers and actors, pastors, politicians looking for votes and a comedienne, speaking on an array of topics ranging from race to religion to immigration," according to the Los Angeles Times. "Speaker after speaker criticized the current administration, decried socialism and attacked the mainstream media."

Angle, a conservative Republican backed by the Tea Party movement, is among a crop of candidates across the nation who are trying to tap into voter anger to defeat Democrats and incumbents on Nov. 2. For months, Angle has been locked in a dead heat with Reid in the race that's too close to call.

Reid plans to spend a record $25 million in his campaign. He's been holding private fundraisers with lobbyists in Washington to fill his coffers.

Angle, meanwhile, has been trying to keep pace by holding private fundraisers and asking for donations on line.
On Tuesday, Angle surpassed a $1.5 million on-line fundraising goal for September, far more than the initial $1 million target she had set for the month.
