Community management group to host HOA Legislative Day in Carson City

To provide better insight into the legislative world and convey issues facing homeowners associations throughout the state, Community Associations Institute, Nevada Chapter, will host a Legislative Day at the capital on Feb. 22.

Members of the institute, the statewide not-for-profit organization serving area homeowners and those related to the HOA industry, will gather from 7 a.m. until noon in the Legislative Building, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The initial meeting place will be in Room 3100.

“Legislative Day is a great opportunity for homeowners and those in the industry to meet with their legislative representatives and discuss HOA issues impacting our communities,” CAI Nevada chapter President Donna Toussaint said.

Meetings with legislators should be scheduled well ahead of this event by contacting legislators directly. Their contact information is online at www.leg.state.nv.us/general/feedback.cfm.

“It is critical that homeowners communicate with policy makers on the issues facing HOAs in the 2013 session,” said Mary Rendina, executive director of CAI’s Nevada chapter. “Without their voices heard, our neighborhoods could be severely impacted. CAI has called 2013 ‘The Year of the Homeowner,’ and we need to make sure we adhere to rules and maintain safe, quality places to live.”

CAI Legislative Action Committee members and CAI lobbyist Gary Milliken will attend to answer questions about the legislative process as it relates to HOA issues. Dawn Bauman, senior vice president of government and public affairs for CAI National, will also attend.

CAI is a 31,000-member international organization representing homeowner and condominium associations and provides education, best practices and resources to the homeowner volunteer leaders and professionals involved in the governance and management of common-interest communities.

The Nevada chapter is one of 59 state and regional U.S. chapters. The Nevada chapter serves the educational, business and networking needs of volunteer leaders and professionals throughout the Las Vegas and Reno areas. With more than 1,000 members, nearly 150 business partners, more than 300 professional managers and more than 400 community association volunteers, the Nevada chapter is one of the nation’s largest and most active chapters.
