DINING: Feeding the kids

Are your kids stuck in the old macaroni-and-cheese-chicken-fingers rut? Do they refuse to eat anything that's not white, or at least close to it? If so, perhaps you should pick up a copy of “Real Food for Healthy Kids” by Tracey Seaman and Tanya Wenman Steele.
The book's 200-plus recipes include such somewhat adventurous but comparatively nonthreatening dishes as Chicken Fried Stuffing, Princess and the Pea Risotto and Pork Chops with Fresh Pear Stuffing and — surprise! — they all include healthful elements, like fruits and vegetables.
The recipe for Chocolate Chip Flying Saucers (those are cookies) contains whole-wheat flour, so you can sneak in some whole grains without the little darlings noticing. And yes, there's a recipe for macaroni and cheese — that would be Mega Mac 'n' Cheese — but it calls for whole-wheat pasta.
There's also a guide to healthful, kid-friendly packaged snacks, and a section of “homemade fast food” recipes that promise dinner on the table in 30 minutes or less.
