Disabled man beaten in suspected road rage incident

A disabled man in Phoenix was savagely beaten, and now his family is desperate for answers. Gabriel Mayorga's family said he was just running to the grocery store for tortillas when he was attacked.

His son, Gabe, said he was beaten and kicked while down, and it may have been a case of road rage.

Gabe shared pictures of his 55-year-old father, his eyes swollen shut, on a ventilator and badly bruised.

"They said his car wasn't parked like somewhere right here I found, and I found his sandals were right here," Gabe said as he walked with us through the parking lot where it happened. He pointed out the remnants of the horrific attack.

"This is actually blood right here, and this is some blood," he showed us.

Gabe said there were few witnesses and little to go on for police to go on. A dark colored twin-cab pickup truck was seen speeding out of the parking lot around 9:10 p.m. Sunday.

"I know how fast road rage can happen, so that's the only explanation I have," he said.

A father and grandfather, Mayorga is already disabled with liver disease. Now he might be permanently blind.

"From the injuries, I can tell that they're trying to do a lot more than just like prove who's the macho man because he was already on the ground at that point," Gabe said.

Mayorga was rushed to a local hospital. His son said every bone in his face was broken.

Gabe said the attack on his father has left him numb.

Mayorga remains hospitalized. Gabe said he will undergo a 15-hour facial reconstruction surgery on Thursday.

The Phoenix Police Department is asking for information that might lead to an arrest in this case. If you know something that might help, call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151.
