ENTERTAINMENT: It’s official — Manilow moving to Paris
One of the worst-kept secrets in Las Vegas entertainment is finally official: Barry Manilow moves to the long-dormant theater at Paris Las Vegas next year, opening a new show there March 5.
What had not been revealed is that Manilow now will be produced by AEG Live, which has come to have a dominant role in Las Vegas entertainment by operating the Colosseum at Caesars Palace and The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel.
Manilow wraps a five-year run at the Las Vegas Hilton on Dec. 30. A news release for the new show says it will be a “reimagined” effort directed by Jeffrey Hornaday, who has staged tours for pop stars such as Madonna. His film choreography includes “Flashdance,” “A Chorus Line” and the Michael Jackson 3-D film “Captain Eo.” Hornaday also has been announced as the director of the fourth movie in the “High School Musical” franchise.
Manilow signed on for a two-year run, with 78 shows per year in the 1,500-seat theater. Tickets go on sale today at $95, $125, $175 and $250.
The Paris theater has been the most conspicuous vacancy of Las Vegas’ economic slump. The venue has been dormant since “The Producers” closed in February 2008.
Manilow has a new album, “The Greatest Love Songs of All Time,” set for release Jan. 26. A movie using his songs also has been reported, but the announced plot would have fans headed to a concert at Mandalay Bay, not Paris.
