Faculty group endorses Reid for governor
The political action committee of the Nevada Faculty Alliance announced Monday it would endorse Democrat Rory Reid for Governor of Nevada.
The group represents faculty at Nevada universities and colleges, institutions that are facing cuts of 6.9 percent as the result of a recent special session of the legislature that sought to balance a budget in which expenses were more than $800 million higher than revenue projections.
“We were impressed with Rory and his commitment to developing a coherent strategy to strengthen higher education in our state,” said Scott Huber, NFA president and a biology professor at Truckee Meadows Community College, said in a statement accompanying the endorsement announcement. “In the last three years, there’s really only been a debate about how much to cut, not any vision about what we as a state need.”
Reid is the only Democrat with broad name recognition in the race, Frederick Lee Conquest is also running in the Democratic primary.
Republicans running include incumbent Gov. Jim Gibbons, former federal judge Brian Sandoval and former North Las Vegas Mayor Mike Montandon.
