Fans invited to drive laps on speedway

Laps for Charity could be a dream come true for local motorsports enthusiasts.

On Sunday, Jan. 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., race fans are invited to Laps for Charity, where they can drive their own vehicles on the 1.5-mile superspeedway at Las Vegas Motor Speedway -- the same track NASCAR stars Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and hometown heroes Kurt and Kyle Busch race on during the speedway's NASCAR weekend.

All proceeds will benefit the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities.

For $30 per street-legal vehicle (motorcyclists are welcome, but must wear helmets and stay on the apron of the track), fans will be able to drive behind the LVMS pace car for three single-file laps at speeds approaching 75 mph. All vehicle occupants must wear a safety belt, and passing and drafting are prohibited.

For $10, fans may have their picture taken in LVMS's victory lane. Photos will be available to take home that day.

"The response to this event has been out of this world," said Rachel Comme-ford, director of the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities, who is expecting more than 1,000 vehicles to participate. "We're very excited, especially because this is our first time hosting an event of this nature, and we hope it just gets bigger next year."

Participating drivers must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license, as well as proof of valid registration and insurance.

Approximately 15 to 20 vehicles will line up behind the pace car for the laps. No child under the age of 6 may ride along, but there will be bleachers and viewing areas available. Fans are encouraged to bring cameras to take their own pictures and videos. Laps for Charity is open to the public and no reservations are required.

"We've not only heard from race fans, but also from Las Vegas companies with fleets of vehicles that want the photo opportunity and to support our charity," Commeford added.

Making a difference in a child's life is the focus of Speedway Children's Charities. In December, the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities granted $255,000 to 44 local children's causes during its annual grant distribution ceremony.
